As the old new game in town, Paramount is now re-releasing the Mirimax films fast and furiously. The last couple of days many of the titles are hitting the preorder lists.

The Saint with Val Kilmer is coming to Blu-ray later this year

I saw The Saint theatrically, but instead of remembering anything about the movie itself, I only remember Entertainment Weekly’s F grade.

I used to get The Saint and Spartan mixed up when I was in high school (two Val Kilmer deception-thrillers that begin with S..) until I actually saw them. Now I remember literally nothing about The Saint, while Spartan remains as one of a small group of films sticking out slightly from my closest shelf to signal its status as a go-to movie for a bad day. Where's that film's U.S. blu-ray release?

1972... My Fair Lady is a Warner film now owned by CBS. Though, the only films missing from between 1927 and 1972 are the Universal-owned Going My Way and The Lost Weekend, plus A Place in the Sun (coming to the Presents line this year) and The Greatest Show on Earth (same, coming same day as the UHD of The Ten Commandments).

Weren't UHD's from new 4K scans/restorations planned for some of those? (At least The Godfather was reported to be in the works.) If these discs are clones of the old ones, maybe this is just Paramount's way of clearing out a lot of stock.

I'll second the love for Spartan. Yet another WB title that I badly want to see upgraded. It has all the things I love about Mamet's work, but what surprised me when I originally saw it was how cracking the action scenes are. It felt like a real advance in his directing chops at the time, especially coming after the somewhat flaccid Heist.

It's definitely not a cheery movie, so I'm curious to know your other go-to bad day movies.

It may not be "cheery" but I don't find it not-cheery. The film is so economical and already set with fully self-actualized characters that we're simply along for the ride on their journey and not sharing responsibility for anyone's development via surrogate alignment, so by the same token I don't think the audience is meant to feel particularly bad when people die, atrocities are hinted at, etc. We're involved in a very specific way, and it's purposed for 100% old-fashioned movie fun.
