Re: Festival Circuit 2023
The ceremony is in five hours, and there's a reliable word-bank of would-be winners already circulating.
I was just going to go with my pre-festival predictions as they seem sufficiently random and informed (insofar as possible), but Koji Yakusho is too perfect for Best Actor and is starting to feel like Renate Reinsve in 2021. Plus, someone needs to be Joel Embiid to Pavel's Jokić.
Previous prediction winners (one point for guessing the correct prizewinner, a tenth of a point for guessing a film which wins a prize):
2017 — JabbatheSlut (1.3) > Omensetter (1.2)
2018 — Omensetter (2.4) > DarkImbecile (1.4)
2019 — (tie) Cremildo, DarkImbecile, Omensetter (1.3)
2021 — Pavel (3.2) > soundchaser (2.3), Omensetter (2.3), Blutarsky (2.1)
2022 — Pavel (2.1) > JabbatheSlut (1.3)

Kore-eda, Glazer, Ceylan, Wenders, Tran Anh Hung, Triet and Kaurismaki’s films have representation on the red carpet, they’re likely to win some award

Oh, and I missed the short film Palme, which went to 27 by Flóra Anna Buda, with a special mention for Fàr by Gunnur Martinsdóttir Schlüter.

Zone of Interest wins the Grand Prix, all but guaranteeing Anatomy of a Fall nabs the Palme d'or.

Trying to figure out what black magic NEON has that lets them actively predict what film will win the Palme d'Or

Re: Festival Circuit 2023
Is having distributed the Palme D'or winner 4 times in a row some sort of record?
At least there is a good chance of NEON showing the Triet near me thanks to its win. It's a shame I can't be sure about the same happening for the Rohrwacher.

Re: Festival Circuit 2023
Surprised only really by Sandra Huller not winning for Best Actress. A German critic I enjoy reading described Anatomy of a Fall as akin to an above average TV movie in his original review of the film. Hope the Kaurismaki will play near me in Philly at least and I'm interested in the Tran An Hung and Kore-eda, maybe the Glazer.

Re: Festival Circuit 2023
Well, it's hard to complain about these awards given that all seven were acclaimed even if Haynes or Kaurismäki would have been more exciting, but it is more exciting to have the Palme come down to two of the more acclaimed films of the festival and not Ken Loach and Xavier Dolan. NEON seems to have a hypothetical hit with Anatomy (good chunks of it may be in English?), and Tran Anh Hung winning Director in 2023 was unexpected. Most of these films received sufficient acclaim or came courtesy of directors who are essentially festival-proof, so hopefully there isn't a Showing Up among the lot that waits an entire year to resurface.

Re: Festival Circuit 2023
Well Go USA have bought Kore-eda's Monster for the US. Maybe, unlike Magnolia with Shoplifters, they'll actually bother with a Blu-Ray.

Re: Festival Circuit 2023
Is Magnolia the most problematic about skipping Blu-Ray releases? It is certainly aggravating.
