Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Any reason to think that the restoration of Cronenberg's Crash that's playing at the Venice Film Festival find its way into CC?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Following on from the Demme discussion on the previous page, it would be great if Criterion got Swing Shift from Warner and released his original cut. I hope that there's something better than that timecoded videotape copy existing in the Warner vaults, but if not then a patchwork reconstruction would still suffice.

The more we find out, it turns out he could be a chilling contributor to commentaries on about half of Kubrick's oeuvre

Someone on thr bluray forums said that the rights to this are with StudioCanal. Does anyone know if this is this true?criterionsnob wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:39 pmThe Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover ”Screening kindly sponsored by The Criterion Collection”

Did Fox distribute this? It could be another example of the other Criterion Collection

Miramax was the U.S distributor in 1990. Lionsgate would own the rights now along with other pre-1995 Miramax titles.

I think Criterion is just one of the FIlmfeast's sponsors. So I wouldn't say that this means that they have the rights to The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, but are just helping to pay for the event. (Filmfeast is run by Neil McGlone, who does research for Criterion.)criterionsnob wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:39 pmThe Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover ”Screening kindly sponsored by The Criterion Collection”

You could be right but wouldn't any of the other films playing on that date be sponsored by Criterion as well?dwk wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 7:20 pm

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Maybe, but looking at the Filmfeast site, the screening is the main event, so I could see a company just sponsoring that.
Although, a couple years ago Neil McGlone did let slip that Criterion was in talks to license The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover but they passed on it because of the source materials. Maybe it has come back around to them and they found better elements or have gotten access to better elements, so they decided to pick it up.

It looks like all of the films have an individual sponsor, sort of like a charity golf tournament where every hole is sponsored; Chocolat, for example, is "sponsored by TFS Photo Woodbridge."yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:14 pmYou could be right but wouldn't any of the other films playing on that date be sponsored by Criterion as well?

For a second there I got excited, but it's not the Denis, rather it's the shitty Depp one

Didn’t Chocolate and Beau Travail play with the Janus opening tag at the recent Denis retro in NYC?dda1996a wrote:For a second there I got excited, but it's not the Denis, but the shitty Depp one

Yes; but the screenings were in Los Angeles at the American Cinematheque.

So much for the old Bill Condon phantom page being for Gods and Monsters

I thought it was well known that the phantom page was for the Twilight films?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
That’s the first I’m hearing about The Twilight Movies. I don’t think that was ever mentioned here. ... My assumption was Gods and Monsters would be a simultaneous release with whatever James Whale release Criterion was going to do (probably Showboat).

You jest. But somewhere on the internet and some other forums I'm sure it was probably suggested

I didn't know this was a Criterion Laserdisc. I'm guessing that makes this a fairly good bet to get a releaseFrauBlucher wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2019 10:07 pmAny reason to think that the restoration of Cronenberg's Crash that's playing at the Venice Film Festival find its way into CC?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Minkin will probably mention this in the round up, but every one of the November releases is the first criterion for the director (on dvd/blu at least).
That's pretty rare to happen in any month, probably a coincidence, but could have been a little in-joke symbolic about kicking off their second thousand films.

Dare you suggest the director of Bad for Each Other isn't analogous to Fellini?
