Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I've been hoping, if not expecting, for them to come from Criterion since the beginning of their Warner deal. They must have asked for them....surely?! When Nolan put a hypothetical Greed release in his top 10, I thought that a release would be imminent then - Nolan surely has the influence within Warner to get them to do whatever he wants with it.

Criterion cares about putting out silents only marginally more than Warners

The only one I see Criterion wanting to license would be Greed because of it’s rich history. They would really be able to do a deep dive, which is something WAC can’t do.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
My dream release from Criterion is now an Olympics-and-Bergman sized boxed set dedicated to the MGM silents, hopefully curated with considerable care - though I'll settle for it being curated at all, really, as I know its a far fetched fantasy. Certainly a few of the films would deserve individual releases (like Greed and The Crowd), and I can't imagine Criterion would pass on the only possible opportunity to do a Buster Keaton silent classic they're likely to get (The Cameraman), or the early Ben Hur if they could manage it.

We’ll both companies don’t really put out “as is” silent releases and would have to allocate a lot of labor and capital to finding the best possible elements and then doing digital restoration and warner would be required to do some film restoration to preserve delicate elements. And dealing with the score is an added complication and expense increasing the overhead per title. And there is probably some corporate interference as well from WB altering the release schedule (because if an old film sells 1/100th the copies of a new film and a silent film sells 1/100th the copies of an old film very many executives are going to be upset about allocating resources to unprofitable endeavors).domino harvey wrote:Criterion cares about putting out silents only marginally more than Warners

The cover’s nice too, different than their DVD release in the Poitier set

Assume you're not counting the WAC DVD line here.movielocke wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 12:50 pmWell both companies don’t really put out “as is” silent releases and would have to allocate a lot of labor and capital to finding the best possible elements and then doing digital restoration and warner would be required to do some film restoration to preserve delicate elements.domino harvey wrote:Criterion cares about putting out silents only marginally more than Warners

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
This is apparently the "three-strip Technicolor MGM musical" mentioned in that recent WA podcast.
Of note, Tex Avery's The Cuckoo Clock (1950) will be a bonus HD short on this release.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this (or if I missed it elsewhere), but a 4 for $44 sale is going on through Monday night, including both DVD and Blu.

I was going to as it’s my top one I want but they didn’t include seven brides for Seven brothers in the sale and if I can’t get my top two wish list items it seems kind of silly to place an order for three others I don’t much -need- to have and don’t want as much as some others.swo17 wrote:Good chance to pick up the Popeye set if you haven't already

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I picked up Gun Crazy, On Dangerous Ground, The Wrong Man, and Home From the Hill. The Minnelli film is the only one I've seen. I remember it being pretty corny when I watched it on Filmstruck, but there's something about his late melodramas that make them compulsively watchable. Hopefully Some Came Running gets a release soon.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
While I certainly welcome a Volume 2 of color Popeye cartoons, this doesn't seem to bode well for the earlier B&W Fleischer shorts.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
It seems A Patch of Blue's release is delayed, as it has never shown up on the WB Shop or Amazon like the other titles announced in March for April.
In any case, they are starting to announce May titles.
The Golden Arrow (1962) - Never released on DVD in US before, best I can tell
The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975)
Shaft's Big Score (1972)
Shaft in Africa (1973)

Shaft sequels were obvious choices with the new movie coming out.

A week into May and none of this month's titles are up at Amazon. Seems kind of weird.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I found links for some, but they are listed without their release dates as stated on wbshop.com
The Prisoner of Second Avenue - 5/14
Shaft's Big Score - 5/21
Shaft in Africa - 5/21
Couldn't find The Golden Arrow on Amazon, but wbshop.com has it listed for 5/28
wbshop.com also list the delayed A Patch of Blue as coming 5/28 as well.
wbshop.com also has a Shaft Triple Feature listing for 5/21 for the three 70s Shaft films, with MSRP at 50% of what the individual purchases would add up to.
