The Mandalorian
Convention footage of Disney’s Star Wars series the Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Nick Nolte, and Werner Herzog. Looks to be firmly in the Rogue One mode, but the guy filming sure seemed into it!

Re: The Mandalorian
This show has an all-around odd cast/crew list - Bill Burr, Carl Weathers, and Taika Waititi are also in it, and Bryce Dallas Howard directed at least one episode.

Re: The Mandalorian
The reports of the footage sound promising as it seems Favreau and his collaborators were very intentional about leaning into the samurai and Western movie roots of Star Wars, but since I refuse to subscribe to Disney +, I guess I will never see this.

The trailer looks good, and feels like a movie, but not enough for me to subscribe.

Re: The Mandalorian
I would certainly watch this if it turned out Herzog was playing an in universe documentary filmmaker interviewing all of the characters in his inimitable style!

Re: The Mandalorian
While not worth the price of admission, the Mandalorian is an enjoyable, if familiar, slice of fanfiction. There's nothing original here and it feels more like a back-to-basics approach to the franchise - the decades of lore is stripped down to a familiar Western plot of a lone gunman escorting a payload and gunning bandits down along the way. Which is not a criticism. What I enjoy about Star Wars is its expansive universe and diverse characters allow for a near-infinite number of stories to be told, so it's nice to have this simplified series that eschews the grandiose design of the trilogies. I just hope it doesn't lose itself and try to shoehorn in more from the main series. The end of episode two hints at larger things on the horizon but I'd rather this continue its small-scale bounty hunter tale.
That said, nothing else on Disney+ is worthwhile so save your money

Re: The Mandalorian
Boy is it thin, though - it felt like a novelty that it was so stripped down and sort of like Bounty Law in space, but after three episodes it feels extremely low stakes. Mostly because once stakes were introduced, they were tossed aside with, to use your words Murdoch, a fanfiction level of "the hero makes all the bad guys go whooooooosh!" which made for dull television. Was hoping there'd be new bounties introduced as the series wore on, but it seems that they're leaning into the weakest aspect of the entire enterprise, which is telling a serialized story rather than episodic ones. Hope I'm wrong and it rights the ship, but the third episode didn't leave me feeling very confident.

I haven't seen this yet, but boy do the angry, lonely nerds who hate the new Star Wars movies love it and consider it "the REAL Star Wars"... so I kind of figured it must suck

Re: The Mandalorian
It is very thin and if I were paying the monthly subscription rather than mooching off of a family member I think I'd be far more critical of it. It really is just a bunch of Western tropes with Star Wars skins slapped on, and it doesn't do anything that interesting with those tropes. I was excited for Pascal as the lead but he's given so little to do and always hidden under his helmet that he could just as easily be replaced by anyone else without the viewer noticing.
That said, I actually do like the low stakes approach but like you I would like to see something episodic rather than it focus on just this one bounty. A series would be a great place to explore this universe, but this show seems to have found its one plotline by episode three and will likely run with it through the finale. The cynic in me feels like this is just Disney's way of marketing baby Yoda plushies for the holidays.

Re: The Mandalorian
I think it's laudable that it has a lack of withering, bantery dialogue and has taken things back to basics. I like the new films well enough for their strengths, but this feels like a welcome change just in how seriously it takes itself (without bogging itself down the way the prequels mostly did). From a tonal perspective, it's a huge step up from the new ones. At this point though, the genie is out of the bottle - we're going to get 500 Star Wars products per decade and are just gonna have to remember which is which, there's no more "main line" of films after this final one comes out, just a bunch of chips off the monolith. Considering that those are usually animated or novels or whatever, I have to imagine that Star Wars die-hards are just glad to see that quality live action content ostensibly directed at an adult (with that word straining as hard as it can, mind you) audience is being produced in general.domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 1:37 pmI haven't seen this yet, but boy do the angry, lonely nerds who hate the new Star Wars movies love it and consider it "the REAL Star Wars"... so I kind of figured it must suck

Re: The Mandalorian
Caught up through episode 3 and I have a hard time seeing how they are going to keep this a compelling or interesting watch, unless every episode will have a setpiece as delightful as The Mandalorian attempting to hijack the Jawas' Sandcrawler in episode 2.
I certainly do appreciate a simple, more visual-story approach to the Star Wars universe with less overdone plot and dialogue, just not entirely sure they are going to bring enough ideas to the table. Kind of feels like I already watched the whole story arc that they set up, now I guess they are setting up a new one?

Re: The Mandalorian
This feels like a pretty spectacular success for all involved. It's good Star Wars fun, feeling in part like the old TV westerns and a video game. The co-stars have all been really wonderful additions, and used better than most of the sequel films (Sydow, Dern, Peg) - Carl Weathers and Werner Herzog have been really good, so I'm really looking forward to Esposito. The music is quite catchy too, much better than Rogue One and Solo. Deborah Chow, perviously unknown to me, has real talent - her episode has been the best so far. Dave Filoni's episode 5 is a real treat for die-hard fans.

Re: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019)
Getting Disney+ "for free" (for 1 year) after signing up for Verizon FIOS (having been screwed by RCN after 6 years of good service -- monthly bill jumped from $160 to $240). So we watched episode 1 of Mandalorian and enjoyed it more than any of the 3 postquels. Loved seeing and hearing Werner Herzog in this.

The Mandalorian
This is easily the best Star Wars thing to come out in film and TV in God only knows how long. It’s a little withholding, but the baby is super cute and there’s no denying the craftsmanship, and this this franchise works better when it paints with archetypal broad strokes anyway.

Re: The Mandalorian
The second season has had some ups and downs, but boy-last night’s episode...Bill Burr is a hell of an actor. His “Django Unchained” moment, and all that lead up to it were pretty phenomenal.
I’ve never heard his comedy apart from his Philly (now dated) rant - but the guy believable in everything he does.

In the post cited here, she basically plays the Hitler Card. If that should render you unemployable, there'd soon be a dearth actors in Hollywood

Yeah I haven't looked through all her tweets, but the ones cited on most articles don't exactly seem like fireable offenses. They're not great, but I get what she's trying to say some of the time even if it's not the best way to say it. I'm probably missing something.

Re: The Mandalorian
She’s hardly a lead.
I looked for tweets that were Trump level bad, but I couldn’t find any or I stopped caring. I heard about her Holocaust analogy though. She’s definitely not the brightest bulb, they many of her kind tend not to be.
Eh, she hardly had any cliffhanger aspect at the end of the season, so it’s not a huge loss storyline wise. Unfortunately it’ll be a bummer for the little girls who dug her character.

Re: The Mandalorian
I think the show is worth watching (it's essentially a TV western a la Have Gun Will Travel or Maverick with high production values, set in space), but not for Gina Carano. I would not call her a "lead actor" on the show. She's a sidekick, and appears in, I think, less than half the episodes. The show will not suffer from her absence one bit.
