Flipside 036: Red, White and Zero

#1 Post by antnield » Fri Sep 28, 2018 8:42 am

Never before released in the UK, Woodfall Films' 1967 portmanteau feature is a major rediscovery. Composed of three shorts – Ride of the Valkyrie, The White Bus and Red and Blue – from three of Britain’s most celebrated directors - Lindsay Anderson, Peter Brook and Tony Richardson – Red, White and Zero embodies the creativity and audacity at the heart of swinging 60s cinema.

Comic legend Zero Mostel stars as an opera singer (in full costume) navigating the London transport network as he attempts to reach Covent Garden in Ride of the Valkyrie.

Scripted by Shelagh Delaney, The White Bus blends realism, drama and poetry as a despondent young woman travels home to the North of England.

And Vanessa Redgrave stars in Tony Richardson’s romantic reverie and musical featurette Red and Blue.

BFI Flipside is dedicated to rediscovering the margins of British film, reclaiming a space for forgotten movies and filmmakers who would otherwise be in danger of disappearing from our screens forever. It is a home for UK cinematic oddities, offering everything from exploitation documentaries to B-movies, countercultural curios and obscure classics, If it's weird, British and forgotten, then it's Flipside.

December 10.

Well, I'm in for more Flipside for sure, but I wondered what happened to the November releases.

I'm not sure. Outside of this one, there seems to remain a number of Woodfall productions numerous enough to justify making a boxset.

Full specs announced:
BFI Flipside presents
Red White and Zero
A film in three parts directed by Peter Brook, Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson

Dual Format Edition (Blu-ray and DVD) release on 10 December 2018

Woodfall Films’ portmanteau feature is a major rediscovery, never before released in the UK. Comprised of three compelling tales, it brings together a trio of Britain’s most innovative directors and embodies the creativity and audacity at the heart of Swinging Sixties cinema. Red White and Zero is released in a Dual Format Edition on the BFI Flipside label on 10 December 2018 packaged with extras including the 1968 documentary, -About ‘The White Bus’, a new interview with editor Kevin Brownlow and an audio commentary by Adrian Martin.

See what appears to be an original, previously unseen trailer for Red White and Zero here. Although missing a section at the start, this partial recreation (commissioned by the BFI using our newly remastered digital print) gives a fascinating glimpse of how the distribution company United Artists intended to promote this important Woodfall film to the audiences in 1967. This footage was included in -About ‘The White Bus’.

Comic legend Zero Mostel (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) mixes slapstick and surrealism as a tardy opera star traversing London in The Ride of the Valkyrie, while The White Bus, scripted by Shelagh Delaney (A Taste of Honey), blends realism, poetry and New Wave detachment as a young woman travels home to the north of England. Tony Richardson (Tom Jones) directs Vanessa Redgrave in the final part of the film, Red and Blue, a musical, melancholy romantic reverie.

Red White and Zero is release number 036 in the BFI Flipside strand, which rescues weird and wonderful British films from obscurity and presents them in new high quality editions on Blu-ray and DVD, with accompanying extras and an illustrated booklet.

Really looking forward to this one - The White Bus is an all time favourite and I always wanted to see the making-of docu (which I always thought was called "Aboard The White Bus", and which is longer than the actual film!).

I’m pretty sure the Vanessa Redgrave section was created in a lab by scientists trying to isolate the worst songs ever written. Good GOD
