Very interesting choice. I imagine there's quite some overlap between Who fans and Star Wars but it'll be interesting to see him in here all the same.

I’ll give JJ this, on the casting alone they gave the *new trilogy to the wrong guy.

What's wrong with Matt Smith ? He's an excellent actor and I don't even watch Dr. Who. I think this new trilogy features by far the best acting in the Star Wars franchise.bearcuborg wrote: ↑Wed Aug 29, 2018 4:23 amI’ll give JJ this, on the casting alone they gave the trilogy to the wrong guy.

I'm consistently amazed when people forget the acting in the prequels exist. You're absolutely correct here. Smith is absolutely capable of doing this.Lost Highway wrote: ↑Wed Aug 29, 2018 7:46 amWhat's wrong with Matt Smith ? He's an excellent actor and I don't even watch Dr. Who. I meant that JJ’s casting choices have been stellar, Matt Smith included. If I had my choice, I’d rather see a JJ trilogy spin-off than Rian Johnson.

Oh, I also assumed you meant the current trilogy

Re: Star Wars Franchise (1977-∞)
Rian Johnson just made the most compelling Star Wars film for non-Star Wars fanatics I can imagine, that totally alienated those who cannot let go of the original 40 year old films (which, thank goodness in my book), so to me there's no better person to start up something separate that those new people can enjoy than Johnson. Let J.J. Abrams do the hyper-careful fan service, he's good at that stuff (and that isn't meant as a dig). The whole "new" part of the new trilogy is going to ruffle feathers by default, so might as well ruffle them into oblivion.

And again, how about not thinking in terms if binary reduction "JJ for old farts who can't let go / Johnson for truly original movies that will ruffle the old farts feathers" and just in terms of generic cinematographic qualities, like storytelling, pace and just expecting not another 2h30 artificially-narrated empty slog that isn't that novel anyway ?

Re: Star Wars Franchise (1977-∞)
Assuming Rian gets to make those films...I’m not so sure now. If anything I would love to see him do a Luke in isolation story. That’s easily the best thing in The Last Jedi.
With regard to the new trilogy, I just wish it had been one or the other for the duration of the sequels. I have qualms and love for both of them, but it’s possible neither can really be judged until the last one.

Re: Star Wars Franchise (1977-∞)
Well, it's not as though Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman aren't also excellent actors... and it's not as though SW has ever been a vehicle for stellar acting. I mean, it was based by and large on Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon serials, FFS, and the acting and dialogue have always reflected that (even if Lucas wasn't as good at conveying it in the prequels) -- well, until the new regime came along and essentially modernized both elements, as well as put much more emphasis on the sci-fi aspect than the fantasy, thus, taking away the universe's otherworldly-ness in the process. "Droid, please!" indeed.Big Ben wrote: ↑Wed Aug 29, 2018 10:48 amI'm consistently amazed when people forget the acting in the prequels exist. You're absolutely correct here. Looks awesome, much better trailer than we got for the last one. Also, LOL @ the title. Maybe all the “Buut Luke” whiners should have waited to see how things pan out, no?

“No one’s ever really gone” is a pithy summation of the problems with these movies

Re: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019)
The late Carrie Fisher will appear as Leia in the film, with Abrams utilizing unused footage they shot together during 2015's The Force Awakens. Colbert asked how they filled the void left by the star's 2016 death.
"We couldn't," said Abrams. "You don't recast that part and you don't suddenly have her disappear. The weird miracle of having a number of scenes from Force Awakens that had got unused, looking at those scenes and starting to understand that there was an actually a way to use those scenes and continue her story, so that it would be her. The idea of having a CG character was off the table … we said, 'what if we could write scenes about her so it's her performance?' "
He noted that Fisher appears in scenes with the late actor's daughter Billie Lourd.
"Every day it hits me that she's not here. It's so surreal because we are working with her still, if that makes sense. She's in scenes. She's alive in scenes," said Abrams.

I guess if it's good enough for Ed Wood.

That particular shot looks like reused/coverage footage from the hug at the end of Force Awakens that's been digitally composited with a new background. Probably with a wigged stand-in for Fisher in that close up of Ridley's face. So just like Ed Wood!

The stand-in for Fisher is actually Abrams' chiropractor.
And I just realized my profile pic is very relevant to this conversation.

It's interesting, based on the trailer it looks immediately like another Abrams film.. I liked The Last Jedi, but it was a little colder, visually, more austere - It looks like Abrams has a better sense of the actors and the ensemble - they exude a different energy in the first movie and the new trailer..

Was that Palpatine laughing at the end? As far as being a teaser this hit all the right spots perfecty. I'm not even a Star Wars fan

Among the big reveals is that Emperor Palpatine, the villain played by Ian McDiarmid in the previous two trilogies and thought to be dead, is back — as his laugh is heard at the end of the teaser. McDiarmid also walked out onstage after the trailer and ordered it to be replayed.

Haha well there we go. I also did not know McDiarmid was still alive.swo17 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2019 5:50 pmAmong the big reveals is that Emperor Palpatine, the villain played by Ian McDiarmid in the previous two trilogies and thought to be dead, is back — as his laugh is heard at the end of the teaser.
