Yes because Dexter Fletcher has a name to protect
So he'd want his first/most predominant credit to be as co-director of a bad film? Assuming this winds up being bad? Sure, he's not a name now, but that would have been even more reason for him to want credit for his work on this were he proud of it

There's been loads of discussions and near-infighting on Twitter about how the film is purportedly hiding Freddie's queerness, and particularly white-washing the fact he died of AIDS by ending the film at their Live Aid performance. Bryan Fuller has been particularly outspoken about it since the trailer premiered online.
Wikipedia credits Aaron McCusker as playing Jim Hutton who was Mercury’s partner till his death, so it looks like that’s not left out of the film. Still, nothing about this looks appealing to me and I’m not much of a Queen fan.

To be fair, I am not a Carpenters fan but I love Todd Haynes's Superstar. But Singer is not on the same level as Haynes, even if he gets to play with bigger budgets.

Hardly you run-of-the-mill biopic. I’m not a fan of the genre at the best of times but could be convinced if the movie is formally interesting, like Superstar, or if I like the artist/s and the music.

...I do quite like The Carpenters though. :)

There was zero chance anyone but Singer would get the director credit here—DGA rules prohibit multiple director credits on a single film without a special waiver, and Bohemian Rhapsody was clearly not going to get one, since this situation (director fired by studio and replaced mid-shoot) is exactly the sort of thing the rule was meant to discourage.

Right. Principal photography had clearly made it past the halfway point when Singer was booted, so I figured he'd retain his credit.
One notable exception to the DGA guidelines, which was clearly precipitated by very exception circumstances, is the shared credit Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson got on Chasing Mavericks.

If you watched Press Gang or Gamesmaster, he does!
