I liked this movie and was glad for the closure (or quasi-closure, since there are book sequels)

Hence finding it a little unusual that they'd want to keep doing this every 5 years or so. Seems like the movie was pretty well received all-around.

Series will be eight episodes, starts filming next month, and the entire original writing/producing trio of Thomas, Ruggiero-Wright, and Etheridge is returning

Pumped!

If iZombie is any indication Thomas and Ruggiero-Wright haven't lost a beat when it comes to this kind of storytelling.

Warner Archives will be releasing the Hulu fourth season of Veronica Mars on Blu-ray in October (confusingly labeled as season one)-- hopefully the earlier seasons follow

Thanks for the thread bump- I keep forgetting this has been out on Hulu for two weeks!

Has anybody watched the new season yet? I love the show and haven’t started season 4 but I’m curious to hear impressions from those who have.

Apparently something contentious happens in the last episode that's divided the fanbase, so you may want to avoid looking for responses til you see it-- I'm waiting to have eight hours blocked out, since I know I won't be able to stop watching once I start

Yeah, the word I've heard is "Rob Thomas doesn't understand his own show and the earlier seasons are retroactively bad now"

It’s funny too, because my impression from the responses is that since Rob Thomas already did the fan service bit with the movie, he went back to making an actual Veronica Mars Mystery for the new season

That’s good to know, and yeah I wouldn’t be able to resist either. I suppose what’s holding me back is that I don’t see a world where diving back into this context doesn’t compel an immediate revisit of the original three seasons, which is quite intimidating. A compulsive binge if there ever was one.

That being said, now I’m more curious than ever to see what Thomas did here. If he had the level of creative control I’d imagine Hulu offers, chances are there’s merit to be found in his choices.

Basically it's the "Luke wouldn't do that" argument. I've also heard the word "misogynistic" thrown around.

Yea, I found the new season pretty satisfying because it eschewed fan service (an understandable criticism of the movie). I imagine that's where some negative fan reaction is coming from. I won't spoil it for anyone else, but let's just say the show didn't forget it's noir roots. I will admit that not every new aspect or character felt perfectly integrated, but the class conflicts of Neptune feel more relevant than ever, so I understand why a return was green-lit. Most importantly, the Keith & Veronica father-daughter relationship is still vital, and Kristen Bell is still Kristen Bell. So I was happy. (As a sidenote: In interviews, Bell has said she wants to take Veronica Mars all the way into the Murder, She Wrote years, and now I want that more than anything.)
Maybe I have a terrible memory, but I'm not sure where any misogyny accusations could be coming from. I find that kind of absurd.

Someone I know called the ending that and then said they rewatched the series from the beginning and saw little subtle misogynistic threads weaved throughout the whole series

I really enjoyed this and the switch of focus back to a complicated case after the fan service of the movie was welcome. The writing is still witty and light, especially in the father-daughter dynamic, which alone makes this worth watching. The show also hasn’t lost its primary interest in the different groups explored in the noir systemic movement rooted in socioeconomic status. The introduction of Matty Ross as a shifty and sharp young girl mirrors a young Veronica in her courageous persistence and is a welcome addition to the cast, as are the other new, and old, characters that work their way into the story. The ending was ridiculous, but not misogynistic at all. Still, a great season until the final half hour when it all fell apart for me on pretty much every level, so while there were more interesting places I expected it to go, what we get for 95% of it is wonderful. Bring on season 5!
