I just checked Baker & Taylor online at my work here. And this IS apparently going out of print. There are 21 copies left on the east coast and 16 on the west coast. Too bad.Matango wrote:Amazon only has it available thru outside sellers on the Used and New button, and quite a few of those sellers are desribing it as OOP.

Unless it's a mistake, (since they said it wouldn't be until after Dec 20th on the backorder thing) it's back in stock finally on the Criterion website!

Re: 65 Rushmore
Is there a BR on the horizon for this? (possibly a Wes Anderson set with the existing BR of Bottle Rocket and Tenenbaums)

Aren't I the swo17 in all of your lives? And come to think of it, I am rather short on pencils...

What would really be awesome is if the pencil cup plays "Making Time" when you open it.

Re: 65 Rushmore
If anyone has seen the old DVD, it was in dire need of a new transfer. For such a new film (at the time), the film presentation was filled with dust and specs that was pretty distracting, and colors being pretty dull as well.

Re: 65 Rushmore
A little wary of this directors cut, but hopefully it's just minor additions (and/or subtractions). It'll give me a good excuse to keep my DVD, since it has some sentimental value to me. I bought it when I was 17, and had no clue what the Criterion Collection even was.

My first Criterion, too. Paid full price at a Borders.

Mine too. Bought it with a Borders giftcard, if I recall, just after Christmas during my senior year of high school (I could have that all wrong, who knows). Bought The Royal Tenenbaums shortly thereafter.
Even after going through oh so many more Criterions since, they're still two of my most treasured films in the collection and ones that I'll hold close to my heart for the rest of my life.

Pretty sure either this or Traffic was my first Criterion as well, back in high school too when I owned less than ten DVDs

I'm better than you guys, Pickpocket and Beauty and the Beast were mine. Same situation of not knowing anything though.

Eh, if I could do it all again, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums would still be my first two Criterions. They are really strong films in my eyes, while still serving an important purpose as some of the most potent gateway drugs of cinema made in the last few decades.

Pretty sure this was one of the first I bought as well, though I've never actually watched it. Is it any good?

Re: 65 Rushmore
My first criterion was Lord of the Flies, some now defunct webstore mispriced it at $6 when it released and I just happened to snap it up. It was actually my first dvd I bought, my second and third dvds were Silence of the Lambs and Robocop, already OOP and I picked them up off the shelves at Suncoast and paid full list for both.
But getting Rushmore was an interesting story. Around the time that Royal Tenenbaums came out I was talking about the film with my coworkers. A guy came in the store and joined the conversation/debate. He came and got food about once a week over a three month period while his house was being repaired and we talked about movies every time. Turned out he worked at the awesome (then independent) local used bookstore and was their dvd buyer. I'd not seen rushmore (other than some clips on TV) at that point and it was one of his favorite films ever. He said since it was the sort of movie it was they actually had quite a lot of people selling the dvd because they 'didn't get it,' and he would usually snap up the Criterions of Rushmore himself to either flip on ebay or just to give away. He said he'd given away about six copies of the film at that point, and sold another handful. So a few weeks after he told me that he showed up with a copy of the criterion rushmore and just handed it over and said I would like it.

$12 used around 7 or 8 years ago. That's my story... I wonder if Bill Murray has seen Kurosawa's "Red Beard" by now...

This is how I got The 39 Steps! It was released around the same time as a slew of cheapo Hitchcock discs, and Fry's had it mispriced and sorted in with those.movielocke wrote:My first criterion was Lord of the Flies, some now defunct webstore mispriced it at $6 when it released and I just happened to snap it up.
I think that was my first Criterion, although it could have been Rushmore. I think it was Steps, though, because it has the earlier spine number and I bought them both when they were new or almost new releases. But I already knew what Criterion was, although I have no idea how I knew.

Re: 65 Rushmore
I think you have that backwards. Wes said in the Charlie Rose interview it was all Bill could talk about the first time they talked on the phone. And if I recall right, he said since that phone call he did see it. It's a funny parallel to the story of everybody and their grandmother sending Bill copies of Bottle Rocket.manicsounds wrote:I wonder if Bill Murray has seen Kurosawa's "Red Beard" by now...
