Re: A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018)
I do remember at some point in the late 90s/early 2000s there was serious talk about teaming Will Smith (as mentioned above) and Jennifer Lopez for a remake. This likely would have ventured into the hip hop/R&B scene had it actually happened.

A few months ago, Sean Penn was on WTF, and he went on and on to Marc Maron about how incredible this movie is. He’s a huge fan of it.

Do you honestly think the 1954 version is worse than the 1937 one ?Fiery Angel wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:52 pmwhich may be why each version is worse than the previous oneWerewolf by Night wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:49 pmThe great thing about all the various versions of this story is that they are each very much of their time. Not who you are quoting, but while worse seems too strong a term, I prefer the '37 version and would more readily rewatch it.

I don't know, Bad Liar was pretty decent (purely for the Psycho Killer bassline). And she really brought in that breathy, not really being able to sing shtick that Camila Cabello et al mine.Mr Sausage wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 5:39 pmSelena Gomez isn't even able to sing her own songs well...thirtyframesasecond wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:53 pmCasting Gaga might've been a good idea 4-5 years ago but her career has been on the skids for a while. If you wanted to cast someone who can sing, act and is relatively popular, at least ask Selena Gomez or someone.

Saying Gaga's career is on the skids and she has no talent is a bit like when people level the same criticism at Kristen Stewart...

And she was goddamn amazing, even if the game's result was heartbreaking for this Falcon fan. Her music isn't in the style I'm typically into, but no way I'll deny her talent.flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 7:12 pmShe was in the god damn Super Bowl halftime show last year
At any rate, finding out that Jason Isbell wrote the song "Maybe It's Time" is enough for me to see it. He's the real deal. The film might be underwhelming, but there's some serious songwriting talent working on the soundtrack.

People: I don't like Judy Garland and I don't like Barbra Streisand.
Same People: I don't like Lady Gaga and she is wrong for THE STAR IS BORN remake.

Re: A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018)
Streisand was wrong for the role. She may have been good casting in the 60s (Funny Girl has a similar narrative in a lighter tone) but by the mid-70s her ego was so all consuming that the vulnerability and insecurity which are essential for the early stages of the film, were out of her range. She's also completely unable to convey grief by the end of the movie in what may be one of the worst acting moments of all time. Then the film ends with an eight minute close up of her.
I've only recently bothered to sit down and watch the whole of the 70s version, which I'd previously only seen in bits and pieces on TV. It's a total train wreck of a movie. I can't think of another film where the star feels so disconnected from the material and their character. The only good thing I can say about it is that Kris Kristofferson looks hot.
I'm sure Fiery Angel will come along in a moment to tell me that I'm wrong

While the word of mouth is very positive for the movie ahead of the Friday premiere in Venice, I thought this would be fun to share: Talkhouse.com went a bit further than just vague tweets and posted a full review that's now been removed. Gaga fansites salvaged parts of it, and the reviewer apparently compared Cooper to "Scorsese, Cassavetes, Kubrick, Hitchcock and Bergman", and that
(As ridiculous and hyperbolic as that sounds, the Gaga fan in me is gonna furiously spread that review)The undeniable standout is Lady Gaga, whose performance here goes far beyond what we typically think of as great acting and moves into the territory of, say, Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence

My father ever the curmudgeon hated the stuff Gaga did solo but went...gaga over the stuff she did with Tony Bennett. She can certainly sing but I've not seen her act.

I didn't finish the AHS series she was in (Hotel). It was undeniably glamorous but just didn't really seem to go anywhere, especially as the previous ones were really strong.

I have no problem believing Lady Gaga could give a better performance than Gena Rowlands. That's not really much of a compliment to either party, though

It was from Talkhouse, and then quickly removed
If you didn't know what Talkhouse was, neither did I - it's run by Josh Modell long of the AV Club, who I always found affable there, but I'm unsure who penned the review.
The buzz on this film is absolutely insane compared to the unbearably treacly trailer, something's gotta give in one direction or another here, cannot wait for the embargo to be up to find out what's what

More that is allegedly from the Talkhouse review, including the bit that phoenix474 highlighted above:
This excerpt almost seems like a Lady Gaga fansite just made it up out of thin air. The descriptions of her acting seem like they were written by someone who never spent much time thinking about acting before, outside of perhaps writing local theater reviews or something

I know there's a secret plot to give domino a coronary through posts like that but Jesus I can't read that with a straight face.

If it's from an actual review on Talkhouse, I'm starting to wonder if maybe... well...
Eep.
