Then I regret setting this thread on its strange path.

Re: Awards Season 2018
Best Animated Film, and the merits of the films nominated in that category, have nothing to do with whether an auteur has been recognized. It's not as though David Cronenberg has made a film that would compete in that category that's being left out in favor of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or Happy Feet or whatever else

Re: Awards Season 2018
The best thing I can say about the Oscars is not the way it pits artists and work against each other in competition - it's that the public recognition encourages others to investigate or at least be aware that there may be people out there who have done work deserving of their attention. That's where I'm coming from. It has nothing to do with whether two people/works are actually in direct competition with each other.

Re: Awards Season 2018
Agreed. Cronenberg isn't even that viable an example considering how he has worked outside the US for most of his career. The lack of Spike Lee wins would at least fit as someone who could have realistically won before and even that is apples to oranges

Re: Awards Season 2018
I'm still so puzzled. Should the Oscars put a moratorium on the Animated Film category until certain people are properly recognized? I don't see the point being made by bringing up Cronenberg or Lee in a grievance about the wrong animated film being nominated this year, and I guess I never will

Every year, people come into the current iteration of the this thread and weigh in on how useless the Oscars are, as though those of us here who follow them see them as the ultimate barometers of quality cinema

I'll be honest I really like the Oscars because I'm a sucker for all the glitz and glam and I have no shame in admitting that.

Re: Awards Season 2018
I never suggested the Oscars were "useless." One can have strong reservations about evaluating an art form like a competition while understanding that a high-profile industry award does actually do something (actually many things) of value beyond that purpose.
This is not what I'm saying at all. Let's just move on.

Did you miss my apples to oranges line or that I said agreed to Domino? I only brought up Lee to highlight that Cronenberg was a weird example.mfunk9786 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 10:34 pmI'm still so puzzled. Wasn't directed at the sentiment behind your bringing up Lee, knives. I agree that we can just move on.

In brighter news, the Detroit Critics Awards nominated Jesse Plemons for Best Supporting Actor

If this becomes a thing I will be very happy. Still my favorite film of the year.domino harvey wrote: ↑Fri Nov 30, 2018 1:28 pmIn brighter news, the Detroit Critics Awards nominated Jesse Plemons for Best Supporting Actor

Re: Awards Season 2018
It's exactly what the Oscars should be rewarding in a Best Supporting acting category, but I sadly doubt it will happen. He absolutely deserves a nom, though-- can you imagine anyone else being as pitch perfect in that role?

Re: Awards Season 2018
For how long has the Cahiers top ten list went out if it's way to be, if not contrarian, just odd?
The Wild Boys is a decent and fun movie, but no way is it top ten material in any year

I don't know if it's to game the overall list or reflective of their true tastes (and possibly both), but a subsection of the critics they poll has routinely in recent years prioritized outsider queer texts over more popularly received ones or other films in general

Also, these lists are just laughingly predictable now, as they always fall into the same pattern: a couple movies no one likes, a couple movies everyone likes, an outsider queer film, a popular film that seems completely out of place, and a Hong Sang-soo movie

Not to mention that at this point Dumont could just film a burn ward and be called a genius by Cahiers (and he's already like, what, two steps away from this already)

The movies are all tied directly to their auteurist advocacy, as many of disliked or populist ones were directed by someone championed by the magazine. I mean, War of the World was consider the best movie of the 2000's by Cahiers, so you would expect that would translate to supporting The Post as one of the top ten pictures according to their staff.

Re: Awards Season 2018
Cahiers is not really affiliated with auturism like they were at the outset. Using Spielberg as an example, no one voted for Ready Player One. You can see outliers better in the individual lists:

Re: Awards Season 2018
Even if that were their exact brief, that still allows for a pretty broad range of possibilities, doesn't it? Anyway, while I've only seen three films from that list (On the Beach at Night Alone, Burning and Leto), they're all well-deserved selections.domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Dec 03, 2018 5:37 pmAlso, these lists are just laughingly predictable now, as they always fall into the same pattern: a couple movies no one likes, a couple movies everyone likes, an outsider queer film, a popular film that seems completely out of place, and a Hong Sang-soo movie

At least I discovered that "The Post" has a better French title.

Re: Awards Season 2018
It certainly fits their mold to be ahead of the curve, if anything. I'm glad someone is putting this kind of list out instead of shuffling around the same 10 awards contenders (and I say that knowing full well that's how my own Top 10 lists tend to skew)domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Dec 03, 2018 5:30 pmI don't know if it's to game the overall list or reflective of their true tastes (and possibly both), but a subsection of the critics they poll has routinely in recent years prioritized outsider queer texts over more popularly received ones or other films in general
A shocking amount of The Post, thoughdomino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:10 pmUsing Spielberg as an example, no one voted for Ready Player One.
