Sounds like a perfect fit for his usual screen persona. He's really one of the great unsung supporting actors these days

Exactly how I feel about Clifton Collins Jr. as well. To have him and McNairy be in the new film is incredibly exciting.domino harvey wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 5:15 pmSounds like a perfect fit for his usual screen persona. He's really one of the great unsung supporting actors these days

That one guy got the idea in the comments: consider the era and the story. But christ have these people never seen a Tarantino movie before? Flashback to 2009 when people complained that the black character in Basterds was "forced in" now it's the opposite. Django Unchained is obvious but Tarantino has also represented asians (from all three major Eastern territories in one single film at that) and latinos. Three of his films had black actors/actresses as leads (we can half count death proof's second half) so what's the actual problem here? Screentime divied up between the as of now predominantly white cast against the so far one known black actor cast in the film? Tarantino is still looking at casting several roles from Bruce Lee to whoever. It's just too early to start this kinda shit. This movie is not called Once Upon an Inclusion Rider in Hollywood.Dead or Deader wrote: ↑Sat Jun 23, 2018 9:31 pmThis Twitter thread indicates we'll see the controversy termite more as it gets closer to release in theaters

Jumping into any comment section on Twitter is an absolute crap shoot unless someone is being ratioed to death. This really isn't indicative of anything other than Twitter being Twitter.

Really happy to hear Perry's involved. I don't know what he's been doing lately but he should've had a much bigger career after his performance in Normal Life. Coming as it did on the heels of his star making turn on 90210, it was a seriously ballsy choice. Ashley Judd was incredible in it as well. Probably the best work she's ever done.

Do we know who’s playing Manson?

James Marsden is the prevailing rumor, because he was added to the cast around the same time as a bunch of other folks, but he was the only actor that didn't have his part announced at the same time. In fact, Sony asked that his character be kept quiet. His role has been described as "small," but I don't think that rules him out as Manson considering how little he might factor into the actual plot of the film as an onscreen presence.

I would have guessed Olyphant

Charles Manson was only about 35 during these events, Olyphant is probably too old for the part. Marsden is a bit too old as well, but he can surely play younger with a bit more ease. Plus the Sony comments... I would be surprised if it wasn't Marsden.

Marsden is 44. With regards to period stuff it seems the actor's age is a relative issue. Johnny Depp was in his mid-40's when he played Dillinger, and somehow appeared younger-looking than Warren Oates who was around the same age as Depp when he did the Milius picture.

I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder, but he looks significantly younger than Olyphant (who is 50), and significantly more like Manson, too.flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 28, 2018 3:51 pmMarsden is 44. I do not imagine a world in which Tarantino cares about the actor’s ages whatsoever. I can totally imagine him getting some 65-year-old actor for the part if he wanted to.

Release date moved up two weeks to July 26th, 2019, will no longer coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Manson Family murders (though it'll surely still be in playing for those looking to hit the theater on that date)

Has been scheduled for August 9, 2019 for a while despite shooting already being well underway. I bet it's ready for and debuts at Cannes.

Re: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino, 2019)
I don't know what Tarantino has planned for this film, but the potential is there for a fairly radical expansion of his style, considering the content, characters and milieu.
I'm no Manson expert at all, but I think it's fairly common knowledge how many Hollywood film and music players were basically one person-removed (if that) from Manson or the event itself: Doris Day's son Terry Melcher, Dennis Wilson and the Beach Boys, Alex Chilton, etc.
It would be nice to see him attempt a more kaleidoscopic form, perhaps akin to, say, Chris Marker -- newly shot narrative footage mingling with stock imagery, old interviews and new interviews with those involved, commentary from experts and historians, news broadcasts of the time, segments of other films or documentaries (either about the subject directly, or as ironic counterpoint - imagine Doris Day film clips used as collage - or perhaps clips from Polanski films,) a range of relevant music broad even my Tarantino standards (the artists mentioned above, but also the Beatles, Manson's own songs, Nine Inch Nails, etc.)
While no one seems to know exactly to what degree the film is about Manson or about the newly written characters, I'd love to see him make a film where the real subject is Hollywood/Los Angeles itself, and the degree to which it has changed since the Manson murders.

I might be the biggest Tarantino defender on this forum but there is nothing in his filmography, Jackie Brown included, that indicates that this will be a sudden and radical leap in his writing style. Perhaps it won't be a revenge film, but I'm sure it'll have all his usual trappings. Tarantino is much too bright a writer to make a movie that amounts to "Hey, Hollywood has changed, man. Did you know that one of the Beach Boys was friends with Charles Manson?" This stuff has been written about a ton over the last 50 years and he knows that.

Re: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino, 2019)
Sharon's system cooling on the film makes me think it's not going to be as exploitive as some folks thought it was going to be. We all know end of the sixties was a turning point for American cinema but I'm not even sure that's what it's going to be about entirely and if it was a simple revenge film I'm not sure Sharon's sister would have been too keen on it. I'm pondering myself if it'll resemble Pulp Fiction in a way. All these things will eventually connect in some way or another. Some direct. Some not. But all of it will be woven into one complete narrative whole. Things like the collapse of the Hays Code. The Tate Murder. Free love. The rise of certain types of stars all began in the late sixties and I can certainly see Tarantino wanting to write about those things. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.mfunk9786 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:37 pmI might be the biggest Tarantino defender on this forum but there is nothing in his filmography, Jackie Brown included, that indicates that this will be a sudden and radical leap in his writing style.
