I'm hoping this is the result of a mix-up where Chazelle thought he was making a movie about Louie Armstrong.

He's been talking about this for a while, not sure where the surprise comes from

Untitled Neil Armstrong biopic (Damien Chazelle, 2017)

#4 Post by Brian C » Thu Dec 29, 2016 3:29 pm

"Mr. Armstrong, how would you describe the feeling of weightlessness?"

"Well, it's a funny thing - all the training in the world doesn't do you any good if you can't learn to give up and go with the flow. And even the tiniest push sends you off in directions you'd never anticipated. All in all, I'd say it's a lot like jazz music!"

No, actually it's like a Jell-O Pudding Pop...
No, actually it's more like Kodak film...
No, actually jazz is like the New Coke: it'll be around forever!

Ryan Gosling hasn't ever given an interview like this.

Jesus. I'm not sure who comes off worse; Teller or the interviewer.

Surprised that was the casting news you posted and not Kyle Chandler.

The review embargo from the Venice premiere lifts on this in a couple of hours, but early leaks seem pretty strong.

Not sure why the trailer for this leaves me so numb, but it just seems so visually benign after La La Land was pretty spectacular in that department. I'm guessing based on the early Venice buzz that my fears are unnecessary, but I've seen the trailer a few times and just walk away with a shrug every time despite Gosling and Foy being two of the most magnetic young actors on the planet at the moment, and Chazelle being on an incredibly hot streak.

I agree - it’s such a standard biopic trailer that there’s no sense of a distinctive filmmaker behind it. I understand why the marketing department would want to play up the award-season biopic angle and leave it at that, but like you I really hope there’s more to it.

Why wasn't that the first trailer?

I read this at first as "Why, wasn't this the first trailer?" and spent five minutes triple checking that I had linked to the new one and that it was in fact a new trailer; that's what I get for not watching trailers for movies I know I'm going to see, even the ones I post here.

A better trailer, it looks engaging but honestly I don't get the impression that I'm going to see anything that's much of a departure from the NASA films of years past. Also was Armstrong's first wife really like that? Maybe it's accurate but I hope she doesn't wind up feeling like a wife phoned in from a Michael Mann movie.

EDIT: Looks like she probably wasn't: "Jan, although she would never gush, absolutely adored Neil. She was a bit in awe of him. She believed in the important work he was doing. She loved the fact that he could come home and explain complicated space maneuvers to her and her two sons."

Whiplash was fine.
La La Land was fine.
This, too, will probably be fine.

Personally, I pretty much detested what Whiplash had to say but I thought La La Land was for the most part enjoyably frothy.

I don't disagree with you on the questionable thematic bent of Whiplash, but I did enjoy the jazz scenes quite a bit.
