Les Miserables (Jean-Paul le Chanois, 1958) received a CNC restoration grant in 2016:
https://www.cnc.fr/professionnels/aides ... 016_602078
In February 2019, the two-part film was shown theatrically in Berlin, running 203 minutes:
https://www.defa-stiftung.de/stiftung/a ... e-elenden/
Now there´s a German Bluray and DVD announced for May 2109:
https://www.amazon.de/Die-Elenden-Miser ... 1-fkmrnull
https://www.amazon.de/Die-Elenden-Miser ... 1-fkmrnull
The Bluray page lists a 206 min. runtime, which would be longer than the Olive Films bluray. The DVD page lists German and French soundtracks.
Also:
https://www.dvdparadies.at/Nach-Herstel ... u-ray.html
The cover lists the "BRD-Kinofassung" as an extra. I take it to be the German dub intended for the West German market, listed as an extra to differentiate it from the main feature, a French-Italian-East German co-production.
The director originally wanted a 5 hour 15 minute, two-part film, but later accepted a shorter version. The CNC initially announced a 4 hour 2 minute run time.
Deleted or cut scenes include:
Cosette and Eponine in the garden
The Thénardier kids plotting with friends
The "storm in a head" sequence shortened
Battle of Waterloo shortened
Many scenes of revolt in the streets - at Café Musain, General Lamarque´s burial parade, scenes on the barricades

Awesome. I know TT had to cancel their release because there weren't good enough elements for them to release it. Hopefully someone puts it out on Blu-ray now!Stefan Andersson wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 2:45 pm

This year's list of Cannes Classics (scroll down to find the full list)
Some notable titles include a new 4K restoration of Easy Rider, 4K restoration of 'The Shining', 3 Bunuel titles getting new restorations (with World Cinema Project behind the restoration for Los Olivdados, so be on the lookout for a future Criterion release), and a new 4K restoration of Milos Forman's 'Loves of a Blonde' (possible Criterion upgrade?).

Kino's been sitting on the Los Olivdados rights for a while. Don't know if the restoration being WCP will complicate that, but I hope it gets released speedily by worry I whoever does.yoloswegmaster wrote:This year's list of Cannes Classics (scroll down to find the full list)

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Gance´s La Roue has been newly restored, and now runs seven hours. 14 reels of camera negative (out of a total of 32 reels) have been utilized, though these reels have been reedited by Gance following first run showings. The original music list has also been used as a source for music reconstruction.
A showing with live music in Berlin is announced for September 2019, followed by showings on two nights on ARTE Channel, October 28 and November 4, 2019.
A DVD release will follow.
https://www.berlinerfestspiele.de/media ... emappe.pdf
There is a book in German, by Jürg Stenzl, about music and film. Chapter 4 deals with the music for La Roue:
https://www.amazon.de/Musik-Film-Konste ... 2-fkmrnull
Full music list on pp.92-93:

Cannes website shows The Shining running time as 2hr26, is this just a typo or what I think it means?

Re: Recent Film Restorations
I doubt it will have the original ending. I feel like the Kubrick estate would ask not to have it a la Pie fight. However, I wouldn’t be shocked in that it has the original ending due to the hardcore fans out there who want to see it.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Less is more when it comes to The Shining. It's become a thing in the last few years to misleadingly promote the U.S. theatrical cut as an extended cut when screened in the UK/Europe. The 119 min European cut is best IMO and as close to a definitive Director's cut out of the different versions.

Didn't see this mentioned anywhere in quick search, but Djibril Diop Mambéty's Hyenas was "restored in 2018 by Thelma Film AG with the support of Cinémathèque suisse, at Eclair Cinema, from the original negative."

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Update on the German Blu "Die elenden" (the 1958 Les Misérables, Le Chanois):
Info on the back cover of the Blu indicates that the disc contains:
the East German long theatrical version (DEFA-Langfassung), 205 1/2 minutes - German dub
the West German theatrical version (BRD-Kinofassung) - 188 1/4 minutes - German and French dubs
https://www.amazon.de/Die-Elenden-Miser ... B07MCW4ZXP
German dub only for the longer version confirmed here, in what reads as an informed review:
https://www.ssl.ofdb.de/view.php?page=f ... vid=446221
So it seems that the West German version is the one Olive released on Blu, judging by the runtime.
One customer review on German Amazon indicates that this Blu looks like a DVD master converted to blu.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
They're also premiering a 2K restoration of The Monkey King/Havoc in Heaven that's actually faithful to the original, unlike the dreadful 40th anniversary "restoration." Hopefully this will finally obviate the need for the patched-together fan restoration that is so far the only way to get a decent version of the original cut on video.

As well as The Tale of the White Serpent, which premiered in Cannes Classics, Toei have given 4K restorations to Isao Takahata's Prince of the Sun, Yūgo Serikawa's extraordinary The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon, and Magic Boy (aka Shōnen Sarutobi Sasuke).

Speaking of Japanese classics, SIFF will also screen Yôji Yamada's Am I Trying and Tora-san's Love Call (the first and eighth installments of the famous Tora-san series) in 4K restorations. According to the press material, all 49 Tora-san films have been digitized and restored by Shochiku in the past two years.

That's good news, since AnimEigo's US DVD set only ever reached one volume, containing the first four Tora-san films.andyli wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 7:12 pmSpeaking of Japanese classics, SIFF will also screen Yôji Yamada's Am I Trying and Tora-san's Love Call (the first and eighth installments of the famous Tora-san series) in 4K restorations.
