Feeling extra glad that I snuck into a press screening for this one in particular

The cutting in that scene puts me in mind of the headachy car chase in Quantum of Solace. Putting that to one side, though, I see Aiden Gillan is hanging in there with the Irish accent to play Scotsman John Reid.

I haven’t seen the movie—is there like a narrative explanation for why it’s shot like that (eg the characters are all on drugs and this is meant to simulate their experience)? I want to give this the benefit of the doubt!

Considering I've seen every film ever nominated for Best Picture (save the two which are completely unavailable), no, I don't think I'll throw that away over one movie, even this one
What are the two unavailable ones?

domino, after you die, they will keep on nominating movies that you will never see. At some point, the percentage of Oscar-nominated films that you have seen will approach 0%.

On the trajectory the Academy is going with its broadcast, there's a non-zero chance domino will outlive the Oscars and maintain his completionist status for eternity

Lubitch's the Patriot is completely lost, and the White Parade only exists in a single print held at the UCLA film archives

Yup, it surfaced a few years ago when I was wrapping up my initial viewings

1931 ADDENDUM
East Lynne
Recently resurfaced after decades off the grid, this is far from a forgotten masterpiece-- but it's not as bad as some of Frank Lloyd's other work in this category, either. Unhappy trophy wife is accused of cheating on her husband and in return her life is summarily ruined several times over for the duration of the picture. Sounds like a grand ol' time at the movies, don't it folks! Typical of the studio prestige fare for this era, this is a blandly stilted collection of literate speech and phony melodramatic crises that is impossibly stuffy and laboriously unhip. Films like this are of course signs of the infancy of cinema, as those who wanted it taken as a serious medium used deadly serious junk to bolster their claims by removing entertainment and spectacle from the equation. How else to explain Cavalcade's win two years later? (You can read the rest of my 1931 writeup here)

I intend to make the pilgrimage for White Parade too (I've seen a couple of blog posts from people who've done it), though I'm still 90+ movies out from that becoming necessary.

Since it feels like the whole world has already commented on all of the ways Bohemian Rhapsody disappoints, I don't have much to add apart from the fact that I was somewhat surprised that the film goes out of its way to infuriate fans of Queen. The carelessness in which the music and history are presented is fairly astounding given that two of the band members were actively involved. What was the point of showing the band performing "Fat Bottomed Girls" on its first tour of the States when the song was actually written and recorded four years later? Why is Brian May shown "introducing" his new song "We Will Rock You" to the band during the recording of "The Game" album (1980) when the song opened the "News of the World" album from three years earlier? The big climatic moment is built around whether the supposedly estranged band members have lost their live chops and may not be able to pull off the big Live Aid performance when, in reality, the band had been touring extensively in South America, Australia and Japan in the months preceding the benefit concert. I know all biopics require some degree of dramatic license, but it seems to me this film is designed to appeal to those who know little-to-nothing about the band. Almost everything about the film's "story" is contrived and that's apart from the awkward pacing and confusing editing.

There actually is a scene late in the film that is shot/edited to simulate a drug experience/mental breakdown. It's one of the better moments, but that's not saying much.

I know a huge Queen fan who loved this simply because it's Queen on the big screen. She's also a big Journey fan so I can't say her recommendation does anything for me. (To be fair, she's simply a big "classic rock" fan so she's really just into an entire era, for better and for worse.)

I know a few Queen fans who turn out not to know much about the band except the songs, and not even which albums they were on. That only actually leave them with having the impression they saw the band vaguely playing live and not realising how much of the movie just isn't true.

I love classic rock and Queen, abs Journey is too much for me, but I also consider Laurie Anderson and Bjork as some of my favorites of all time.
I hear a lot of people say they enjoyed even though it was terrible, which I guess they enjoyed the music and acting because what else is there.
King of regret I didn't just watch the LiveAid performance instead, as that seems a much better experience.

On a side note, do that many people love Queen that much that this has grossed 800+ mil.?

My dad, who has not gone to see a movie in the theatre in probably fifteen years, called me on his way to going to see this the other day. I think it's less that people love Queen and more that they've heard the songs, the movie's popular, and it's still in theatres, so it's not something that requires much thought. Call it the CBS sitcom of filmdom.

Queen has remained huge in Europe and Asia, so the fact that it's made $600 mil outside of the U.S. isn't surprising. But the $200 mil tally domestically is a shocker (to me, anyway, a big Queen fan who thought this would be in and out of the theater in a couple weeks).
