I've just sort of discovered the works of Romuald Karmakar, and would love to see more of them. Right now I've got the R1 (oop?) disc of Deathmaker, as well as the R2 German discs of Nightsongs and The Himmler Project (both have English subs).

Does anyone know of any other films of his that have been released? Hopefully with English subs!

Thanks in advanced, and if you're not familiar with his work, I'd recommend checking it out.

Absolut Medien (who released the subbed discs of Nightsongs and The Himmler Project) also released 196 BPM, with Die Nacht Von Yokohama as a bonus. 196 BPM has no dialogue and doesn't require subtitles. Unfortunately Das Frankfurter Kreuz, his contribution to "2000 Seen By", doesn't seem to have made the cut for the US box set of that series. There's a German disc, but it seems unlikely to have subtitles. I haven't seen it, so I'm not sure if the film requires them. His (great) recent film, The Devil and the Wide Blue Sea, also has no dialogue, so if that shows up on DVD, no need to worry about subs.

I'm just discovering Karmakar myself, but I've been quite impressed with what I've seen to date. It may be faint praise, but Olaf Möller called him "the finest German filmmaker of the last two, maybe even three decades". If anyone is interested in reading further about him, there's a good, if slightly out of date, article by Alexander Horwath here. His most recent film sounds absolutely fascinating.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check it out. Actually, I watched Nightsongs last night and noticed that there was a trailer for 196 BPM, as well as another film I can't recall what it was, along with the other Absolut Medien releases. The disc was excellent, great picture, great subs, etc.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that his films remind me of Ingmar Bergman's work. That kind of tight filmmaking focusing on the lives and interactions of individuals and their inner turmoil.

There is also Warheads, Hamburger Lektionen and Manila - no subs to my knowledge - but all 3 are very interesting.

The website:

the youtube channel:

and the Olaf Möller book (german language):

With the book i have been re-watching some of his films recently and its really a shame that i am not able to watch many of the others…
