I recently was knocked out by the cinematography of John Ford's The Fugitive (1947), which was shot in Mexico by Gabriel Figueroa, a formidable cinematographer who worked with everyone from Eisenstein to Buñuel to John Houston, but did the majority of his 200+ films for Mexican directors such as Emilio Fernandez and Roberto Galvardon.
Tracking down these films in watchable condition has been frustrating. Several of them have been beautifully restored, and shown at retrospectives by MoMA or Cinemateca Nacional in Mexico City, but no blu-rays, and no streaming. I checked out several DVDs from the library, and they are all atrocious, only one had English subtitles.
Some of the restorations have leaked on YouTube, but a few of the uploaders have this atrocious habit of cropping the films so there are no black bars on a 16:9 TV, ruining the framing of many shots.
Are there any blu-rays around that I don't know about?
