I was going to but then I read all the lousy reviews. Any good?

I didn't see it, but I kind of don't want it to be good. There has to be a tipping point or a shark-jumping moment with these kinds of shows on networks coming soon if we didn't pass it already.

It sounded interesting and I like Bacon, but I really don't have much patience for these crime shows anymore. My wife likes The Mentalist and Elementary and I can watch those, but these others come off incredibly sadistic and seem to be more about gore effects than actual murder/mystery type storylines. For me it's just gotten ridiculous where a TV show can have things far worse than anything that appeared in RoboCop. Hell, I think an episode of Bones will top any of the more gruesome scenes in RoboCop. And this is coming from a guy who has actually never been bothered by violence in the movies (other than torture porn).

And I'm not trying to start a debate on violence in the media leading to violence in real life because I don't believe that, and this has been bugging me long before the recent shootings. I just really don't have the patience for it anymore.

Plus, like Domino, the middling reviews pretty much sealed it for me.

My ex-girlfriend loved Criminal Minds and CSI. I often felt like Sideshow Bob watching MacGuyver with Patty and Selma watching them with her.

I could stand early days of CSI but Criminal Minds always rubbed me the wrong way and it just got worse as it went. I think that's the show where I started to get more annoyed by the violence, followed by later CSI (compounded by awful writing) and Bones and the like. Thankfully my wife stopped watching all of them because she started to get aggravated by the violence.

Man, I miss Law & Order (the real one.)

I feel pretty much the same as you, Chris. I recently watched an episode of Rizzoli & Isles twice because my sister-in-law was supposed to be in it. I found out later that her part got trimmed, but what a depressing 90 minutes that was. I have no interest in any of these serial killer, medical examiner, or other cadaver-porn shows.

I remember an episode of CSI a while back where the investigators encountered a body which had bloated up in a running bathtub, essentially liquefying and flooding out the house with liquid corpse. It's hilarious that middle America will gladly sit thru something like that but will decry immorality elsewhere!

The Following basically sounds like a more morose Millennium and Millennium was already a more morose Millennium!

Once, at a bar, I caught part of an episode of Bones. I was somewhat surprised to see someone rather graphically have their throat slit. Even more surprising was the appearance of Stephen Fry, playing a man who, among other things, was an expert in death metal.

You can commit whatever acts of violence you want as long as you don't say naughty words/ show penis. [/Kyle's Mom]

That one is especially depressing for many reasons. Sorry you sat through it twice. My wife likes that show as well but thankfully she doesn't expect me to watch it with her.

Oddly enough I can't think of anyone in my family who watches those shows, except maybe my dad. I haven't caught much of it recently, but I still think NCIS is the most tolerable of the bunch. I'm repeating myself here, but if CSI was part charm and part gloom, NCIS took the charm and Criminal Minds took all the fucking gloom it could.

I miss L&O too.

All the comments about the graphic violence in TV cop shows reminds me of that section of the "How TV Ruined Your Life" episode which brought up the infamous Wire In The Blood series.

I got kind of a kick out of Criminal Minds seeing what ridiculous serial killer they'd come up with next. Although I've always hated most procedural crime dramas, even the early L&Os, so it's not like I really noticed a decline in the material.

The talk in this thread and in the AV Club reminds me of how brilliant the "semen database" line in Superbad was. The idea that even young cops are lured in by the exaggerations of those shows is hilarious.

4 episodes in and I have to say it's an okay show. It's basically a 10 hour slasher film that goes into areas that movies can't/don't. It's at it's best when you are with the trio of killers because of their psuedo family sexual relationship. It really comes down to how you handle plot holes and suspension of disbelief because if you watch it as a procedural it fails, as a Kevin Bacon vehicle it fails but as something on its own it's pretty good. If you loved Harpers Island you'll love this show.
