As is the Mask of Fu Manchu. Incredible set-pieces, jaw-dropping racism (hoo-boy what an ending). Boris Karloff and Myrna Loy in yellowface. What's not to love? As long as you root for the Asians against the namby-pamby British colonialists, it's a very enjoyable film.

It's also one of Jonathan Rosenbaum's 1000 essential films.

Definitely, Mask of Fu Manchu! It should look very nice, too. Here's what Warner's had to say about it during the last chat in February:

We found original camera neg on both MARK OF THE VAMPIRE and MASK OF FU MANCHU (thought destroyed), The restorations are stunning! ...and yes FU MANCHU has the censored scenes put back in!

I actually like the artwork and from the looks of the spine, it seems that these will be packaged in thin amarays, thus making them unavailable individually according to Warner recent packaging policy.

That cover doesn't do much for me - not really classic, not really contemporary. It looks more like a package Universal would release rather than Warners.

I dunno, I don't think it's any different than other Warner box set covers - jumbles of cover art found inside, vaugley pleasingly arranged. This one at least has a coherent color scheme and nice fonts.

To me the case looks more like book-fold package, than a box with individual cases.

It's more likely so slim because there are 2 films on each disc (a la the Lewton set) and thus only 3 Thinpak cases in the box.

I am excited to see that one of the great two-strip technicolors is going to get an issue on DVD. Dr. X is a very interesting film that combines the horror craze of the 1930s with WB's style of films that are critical of officials. Indeed Lee Tracy's turn as the wise-cracking, amorous newspaperman is also quite interesting. It is just a shame that they did not include a single disc of Curtiz's Mad Genius or The Mystery of the Wax Museum in this release. I will definitely be purchasing this set, not only for the Curtiz films but also for the Tod Browning film included.

Levitating in anticipation... so long overdue, not only the transcendant MAD LOVE but FU, X, DOLL, and I really love the cheeseball MARK OF. This set provides all the essential vitamins & minerals for the kid AND cineaste in all of us.

Talk about an essential set!

I've just finished watching this set myself - all of the films are great fun, but I'm particularly taken by The Mask of Fu Manchu - it's exactly how a live action Tintin film would/should be!

Warner already has (for almost 3 years now) a do-not-miss flipper with MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM on side A, with the Price remake, HOUSE OF WAX, on side B, both in gorgeous transfers.. especially notable is the beauty of the 2-strip resto on the original. Essential milk and honey for horror film/film lovers. Amazon

I can imagine that Warners would assume that no one would be interested in it, but I wish they had included the black & white version of Doctor X. It was shot at the same time but with a separate camera.
