Life is Sweet

#1 Post by MichaelB » Wed Jun 07, 2017 10:14 am

From the latest BFI press release:
On 21 August Mike Leigh’s Life is Sweet gets the Dual Format Edition treatment. Leigh’s much-loved film was his third theatrical feature and stars a stellar British cast including Jim Broadbent, Alison Steadman, Stephen Rea, Jane Horrocks, Claire Skinner and the unforgettable Timothy Spall as wannabe restauranteur Aubrey. Also included is Leigh’s 2012 production A Running Jump, which was made for the Cultural Olympiad and has never been previously released on DVD or Blu-ray. This marks the first time that the BFI has released any of the work of one of Britain’s most popular and celebrated filmmakers.

Finally, a decent UK edition of Life is Sweet. And a recent short added as well!

Seems to me BFI are increasingly digging around in the Film4 vaults...how long 'til we get When the Wind Blows, or even better; Local Hero?

Both of those sound great (and Local Hero sounds inevitable given Bill Forsyth's That Sinking Feeling got a Flipside release! Perhaps it will depend on when Mark Kermode has free time to do extras for it though!), but if they are trawling Film4's vaults I'd love them to unearth Dennis Potter's only feature film, Secret Friends starring Alan Bates.

Considering they've released several of his other films, I wouldn't be surprised to see them rescue Terence Davies' The Neon Bible either.
