More on this from Variety, with indicators of a hell of a cast.

Re: Martin Scorsese
That it is.
A cast like that, I'm not sure who'll play Sebastiao Rodriguez and who the Kurtz-like Cristovao Ferreira. Age-wise, logic dictates Benicio gets Rodriguez and Day-Lewis Ferreira.
Benicio del Toro the lead in a Scorsese? I can't wrap my head around that, have absolutely no idea what to expect from such a merger.
Bernal definitely means Garrpe, though, and that I can imagine quite well. It's a very minor role in the novel so I wouldn't be surprised if he passes on it.

Re: Martin Scorsese
Benicio & Scorsese will certainly equal an awesome performance. For what it's worth, I thought he was just as good in Sin City as he was in 21 Grams. He can make chicken soup out of chicken shit, and so can Scorsese. I'd really like to see Martin case Russell Crowe in something down the line, something that got me thinking since Leo is working more with Ridley Scott now.

Re: Martin Scorsese
Has Martin ever talked about if or not he took psychedelics? I know that later on he had a cocaine problem, but I was just curious if that was at all part of his youth.

Scorsese to offer restored films online
Shadi Abdel Salam's “Al-Momia†(1969), Emilio Gómez Muriel and Fred Zinnemann's “The Wave" (1936) and a remastered version of Presburg/Powell's "The Red Shoes" (1948) are this year's new restored movies being shown at Cannes.Scorsese Will Distribute Restored Films via Internet
Martin Scorsese, as ardent an advocate as there is for serving up film the old-fashioned way, has decided to embrace digital distribution for movies restored by his World Cinema Foundation
The films that the organization restores every year — often obscure titles like “Dry Summer,†a Turkish picture from 1936 — will now be available online through http://www.theauteurs.com, a Web site that calls itself a “virtual cinematheque.â€
Many will be free. And a partnership with B-Side Entertainment will soon bring the foundation’s films to Netflix and iTunes.
The restored movies will also be broadly distributed for the first time to museums, colleges, festivals and film clubs.
Master copies of many obscure films from decades past have deteriorated so much that they are no longer usable or have disappeared. Only about 10 percent of the silent movies made in the United States, for instance, still exist.
“The more audiences see these films, the more they want to see other films like them,†Mr. Scorsese said. “Then what happens is the audience changes, which means the movies that are being made change.â€

Re: Martin Scorsese
Sorry I've just seen your post Zumpano - if you have not already found it yet I can highly recommend the very amusing Film Forum podcast (dated 2nd March 2011) of a Q&A session with Fran Liebowitz following a screening of the film.

Blu-ray of New York, New York to come out in June, at quite a low pre-order price. Between this, Taxi Driver, and the amazing-looking French blu of Mean Streets, this is a good time for Scorsese in HD.

Indeed, I'm actually holding off on buying King of Comedy on DVD lest Fox decide to upgrade to Blu-Ray anytime soon.

Love to see the same, but I'm wondering if that's less of a possibility here in America...it did so poorly at the box office and I don't think it's ever been that popular on home video.

Re: Martin Scorsese
Just saw Mean Streets at Lincoln Center (with Martin Scorsese giving an introduction and a post-screening q&a!) and the print looked pretty damn new. What was amazing was the sound - you can hear all the surface noise from the needle drops used for the soundtrack perfectly, especially on "Be My Baby."

Re: Martin Scorsese
Scorsese's 85 must see films. Can't say I disagree with too much on a quality level and even those I disagree with I'd still say are cultural must sees.

Re: Martin Scorsese
That's far too much Rossellini for a General Must See film primer.. but okay.
But that would be SECRETS OF A SOUL from 25/6, I would imagine.Pabst ( Not Secrets of THE Soul 1912). Unless there is another film that they're talking about I'm not aware of.

Re: Martin Scorsese
I get the impression that it's just a list of movies Scorsese likes and wants to share, and the YOU MUST WATCH THESE OR YOU ARE A PHILISTINE shit was applied post hoc. Interesting list, definitely. I didn't realize Scorsese was such an Altman fan, and I'm really happy to see Do the Right Thing on there.

When I saw Health of all things on there, I got really excited that maybe he had listed A Perfect Couple too, but no such luck. It's okay, it's still his forgotten masterpiece to me...matrixschmatrix wrote:I didn't realize Scorsese was such an Altman fan

It doesn't seem to be even that: it sounds like it's essentially 85 Movies Martin Scorsese Namedroped In Our Interview.matrixschmatrix wrote:I get the impression that it's just a list of movies Scorsese likes and wants to share...

Re: Martin Scorsese
It would definitely explain why the foreign cinema is so overwhelmingly Rossellini. I'm sure hearing about 85 great movies is about par for the course when having a conversation with Scorsese.Cold Bishop wrote:It doesn't seem to be even that: it sounds like it's essentially 85 Movies Martin Scorsese Namedroped In Our Interview.matrixschmatrix wrote:I get the impression that it's just a list of movies Scorsese likes and wants to share...

Considering how much Minnelli is all over that list, I'm guessing they referenced the wrong Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Love that Health was mentioned. Hopefully he'll at one point help getting the film released (via the Film Foundation perhaps?)!
