MYA Communication

#1 Post by hammock » Tue Mar 10, 2009 3:06 am

MYA continues where NoShame stopped. MYA is owned by Salvatore Alongi and Marcello Rossi, who both worked for NoShame. They still don't have a website and there might never be one, as they want to keep the costs as low as possible in order to adjust to the significant drop in DVD sales overall. MYA is distributed by RYKO and releases 3-4 new titles every month. The list so far:

001: The Blind Woman Of Sorrento
002: Provocation
003: The Virgo, The Taurus And The Capricorn
004: The Maniacs
005: The Inveterate Bachelor

Some details on MYA finally emerge in response to internet bitching about flaws on the Four Flies on Grey Velvet disc.

It's going to be a busy year for MYA:

Here is a list of forthcoming releases from Mya that should carry the company through 2011. The list should not be considered definitive, as there may be changes. Right, uh-huh. They're going to release 119 obscure Italian films in 33 months. In other news, Fantoma will have 26 more Yasuzo Masumura titles in stores by the end of the year.*

Maybe they won't, but to be fair isn't that about the rate they've been cranking thus far?

Hammock - can you contextualize some more for us? What should be jumping out at us here? I see at least a few more putative re-releases of some NoShame stuff, like Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh. Horrible Dr. Hichcock should set more than a few people off - DVD Savant will be giddy I imagine. Vendetta di Lady Morgan looks interesting - as a fan of the ridiculousness of Bloody Pit of Horror, I'm hoping for more of the same here.

Er, good point. Except that they'll saturate the market and flame out well before 2011 -- I mean, that's as many films as Criterion puts out in the same amount of time, and the demand for lesser-known Italian movies has to be a lot more finite.

Not that my skepticism should be read as complaint -- I'll be delighted to get as many of these as we can, as long as MYA ponies up for English subtitles whenever they include an Italian audio track. Maybe some of the later films play better or the same in English, but the Bread, Love and Dreams DVD is worthless with an English dub as the only option.

From lovelockandload.net:
Well waddya know...

The following info is from an 'official announcement' in a newsletter from the Profondo Rosso shop in Rome. As you all probably know, it's owned/run by Dario Argento and Luigi Cozzi.

Pinched and plundered from the gentedirispetto forum - posted by dan880

In ye olde Anglais...

Good news and bad news. The good news is that the much sought after film by Dario Argento, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, has finally been released on dvd in the United States and an Italian release was announced for May by the distribution company 01, (Who are none other than RAI Cinema)

The bad news is that lawyers working for the Argento family have begun proceedings to stop both releases. Why? Because Dario and Claudio Argento, who own all territory rights except for America (where it's owned by Paramount) were only informed of this release by chance. An unknown foreign company sold the rights to Four Flies on Grey Velvet to RAI, but Dario and Claudio claim they never sold the rights to this unknown foreign company, so, according to them, they regard it is a gross act of audio/visual piracy.

Injunctions have already been issued to prevent the release of Four Flies on Grey Velvet in Italy. In the meantime, RAI has announced they have temporarily suspended distribution of Four Flies on Grey Velvet, at least until the rights issue has been cleared up.
(Dozey translation by Roky Erickson and the Aliens)

Looks like the MYA disc may well go up in price?

Also, it begs the question, how did they get hold of that master?

The implication to me is that its the company that felt they could sell the rights to Mya that is mainly at fault. The FOUR FLIES rights have been famously tangled for years and Mya likely made a query, was eventually told by RAI "Yes, we have it and you can license it", and proceeded in reasonable good faith from there. Mya would never have been able to obtain the negative unless those initial proper channels were followed, full contracts were signed and payments made. It's just that in this case Claudio and Dario Argento dispute that those channels should have been allowed in the first place. If RAI's claim to proper ownership really is invalid, Mya likely has every right to be as ticked off with RAI as the Argentos are.

Disputes over the rights surrounding Eurocult DVDs are fairly common. Fulci's ZOMBIE became ensnared in a rights dispute for a year or more when Blue Underground's Bill Lustig paid to relicense the film, had all the correct documentation, but was then told by the licensor that his documentation was invalid and Shriek Show now had the rights after all. The only way that mess was solved was when Shriek Show and Blue Underground agreed to amicably proceed with dual releases of the film, so the movie came out via BU, and then via S.S, with each release just a few months apart.

I hope Mya keeps going and gets through as many of those enticing titles they've listed as possible.

Thanks for the updates on MYA's releases, Hammock. I am taking notes for the upcoming DDD sale.

Interesting that they are re-releasing Devil In the Flesh. I wonder, if it will be a straight re-issue. As far as I know, the No Shame release was also the complete uncut edition, and it came with good extras.

The NoShame release was uncut in its original aspect ratio, digitally re-mastered from the original negative, uncut and uncensored with Italian mono and optional English subtitles. Running time 114 mins. I have no doubts MYA will be using the same transfer that includes the sex scenes but I'm not sure they will include all the estras and maybe we'll have an English dub instead of subtitles.

NoShame Extras:
Stolen Years, Hidden Lives –- (25:57) A very fascinating set of interviews with former, real-life Red Brigadiers Adriana Faranda and Mara Nanni. Both light up a cigarette and proceed to tell you in detail about their time with the Red Brigade, their time in prison (each of them was imprisoned for over a decade) and their view on how this was presented with the politics in Devil in the Flesh. This is the best feature I have seen on a NoShame disc to date. It is edited nicely with little stumbling about. They aren’t afraid to criticize the film, but mostly they share their experiences. History and documentary buffs will dig this insight.

In Bellocchio’s Flesh –- (27:12) Another fantastic feature! This is nearly a half-hour of Bellocchio discussing Devil in the Flesh, its source material, the politics of the film, and some of his other works. The flow is constant, and while he is never caught repeating himself, he does seem to stumble over his words quite a bit. I haven’t seen most of Bellocchio’s filmography, so much of that part of the discussion was lost on me. Perhaps NoShame can rectify this by giving more of his films a DVD release in the future. There are a few audio pops that are distracting and occurred during playback on two different machines, however, I am unsure if this is just my disc, or the production.

Original Theatrical Trailer –- (2:28) Nothing surprising except that it uses a couple of alternate shots to show the characters more fully clothed. This is somewhat odd since the trailer features quite a bit of nudity regardless.

Poster and Still Gallery –- (0:28) A series of 12 various stills and posters pass by with the soundtrack playing in the background.

I would certainly consider purchasing Devil in the Flesh again if it is sourced properly. No Shame's disc was one of the last to be improperly converted (PAL-NTSC) before they adjusted their practice. If Mya's DVD is properly converted I would most definitely consider it.

Hammock, since I get the feeling you own most of these releases, is there any way you could comment in your initial post, which of these films are presented with dubbed audio, and which have English subtitles?

Presumably all of them have dubbed audio - sync-sound was as rare as hen's teeth in Italian cinema of the time.

That being the case, the best option is to offer a choice of dubbed Italian or dubbed English, since it's by no means a given that the former will be more satisfying (especially if the films feature English/American actors in the leads).

You can use hkflix to see Audio/Subtitles options. Most of them has English dubs only a few have English subs. I always hope for original Italian language with English subs as much of the energy is within the spoken language. Some of the dubs are rather good though.
