Its announcement apparently escaped my attention, but Wake Island is coming to Blu-ray in August!

Kino is announcing a Cary Grant set tomorrow, and they've already revealed that 'Wedding Present' will be a part of it.

Maybe it's for licensing reasons but I do hope they can break up these sets individually down the road. They're really just cheap boxes with individual titles in them and the selection has been all over the place for most of them.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
I wouldn't mind if their sets were a little larger, maybe five films, but lately it seems as though they're trending towards mostly doing sets of three. With a set of five films, if there's a movie I'm not interested in, it's not a that big of a deal. However, in sets of three, a single dud can really drag down a set for me.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
The idea of doing these box sets is in half for that reason: so you’re spending money for a title you wouldn’t spring for otherwise. The other half is just to appeal to whatever demented people are searching for Deanna Durbin and, being fans, decide to pick up an easily marked set labelled as the Collection (the inexplicable first of three!)
As someone who’s been kind of cold on Kino in general I think the KLSC line has really had an astounding 2020 between the Universal and SC titles and other than the Deanna Durbin set(s) there’s not a single one of these three movie boxes I don’t want to get. I like the format, even if I understand why it’s maybe a little consumer unfriendly. But these movies probably wouldn’t sell well enough to work as their own so it makes sense to me.

Has KL said anything about the release date of Ladybug, Ladybug? It's been a year since they announced it was forthcoming shortly.
Are they waiting to tie it in with Diary of a Mad Housewife?

The KL Insider said they are working on another Francesco Rosi title ( Lucky Luciano isn't coming until 2021) that's not The Mattei Affair.
With Criterion announcing Christ Stopped at Eboli, Illustrious Corpses seems to be the most logical guess.

Great to see someone releasing some James Whale. Hopefully By Candlelight isn't far behindComing September 29th!
The Kiss Before the Mirror (1933)
• Audio Commentary by Film Historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
• Trailers
• Optional English Subtitles
B&W 69 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
From James Whale, the legendary director of Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, Show Boat and The Man in the Iron Mask, comes this daring drama with a touch of the macabre starring Nancy Carroll (Broken Lullaby), Frank Morgan (Fast and Loose), Paul Lukas (The Lady Vanishes) and Gloria Stuart (Titanic). When Walter Bernsdorf (Lukas) kills his wife for having an affair, lawyer Paul Held (Morgan) takes on the case. Suggesting that Walter could be acquitted by means of temporary insanity, Paul not only realizes that this defense may work but that also some of the behavioral patterns Walter’s wife showed in regard to her infidelity are appearing in his own wife, Maria (Carroll). Paul realizes that if this defense could work once, it might work a second time. The Kiss Before the Mirror is a riveting pre-Code thriller beautifully shot in glorious black-and-white by the great Karl Freund (The Last Laugh, Metropolis, Key Largo).

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
Perhaps I'm late to the party, but does KL have a history of misprinting parts of their packaging? The back of my copy of Daddy Long Legs has all correct info except it says the film is only 91 minutes and from the year 1972. I had a mild anxiety attack that this was some strange remake I had never heard of, before realizing the error was not mine

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
It happens. The PTSD color noir with Ralph Meeker (Can’t remember the title) had the wrong aspect ratio and maybe running time too. They’re just template errors where the designer used the previous back cover they made and forgot to change them

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
Kino has announced a Blu-Ray of FELLINI'S CASANOVA for release in September. I guess it won't be appearing in that long-rumored Fellini Box from Criterion. Or will it?
Coming to September 22nd from Kino Classics!
Fellini's Casanova (1976)
• Includes both English & Italian Tracks with Optional English subtitles
• Audio commentary by film critic Nick Pinkerton
• Booklet essay by film scholar Alberto Zambenedetti, PhD
• Theatrical Trailer
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
The incomparable Federico Fellini (La dolce vita) directs this visually stunning portrait of Casanova, the infamous Italian womanizer, adventurer, author and libertine. In a remarkable performance, Donald Sutherland (Klute) portrays the great seducer not as an amorous anomaly, but an everyday man living in extraordinary times. Featuring dazzling European settings (although it was filmed entirely in Rome), an unforgettable musical score by the great Nino Rota (The Godfather), and Oscar-winning costume design by Danilo Donati (Romeo and Juliet), Fellini's Casanova is a cinematic experience to fall in love with. Fellini and Bernardino Zapponi (City of Women) received Oscar® nominations for their adapted screenplay.

I love the label for the sheer quantity of oddball obscurities they release, but... yes, Kino is virtually synonymous with sloppy slap-dash quality.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
I'll praise Kino for releasing some very important films in very fine editions, but yeah. I've been burned enough to be very sure to check the reviews online of their releases before purchasing. The SPIES and WOMAN IN THE MOON debacle was the last straw on that score.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
There's a whole thread tracking reported issues with KL discs on the other forum, started after the Insider got tired of fielding complaints in the main thread ("This is an announcement thread not a complain thread" yadayada), agreed to address issues in the other thread, and then—surprise—promptly ignored. Many of the ones listed are just bad compression, but there are a couple dozen that have other issues listed:
And that doesn't include packaging template mistakes like that, or announcing they were going to use the new master of Kind Hearts and Coronets, being sent the old one by StudioCanal, and nobody noticing until customers pointed it out—which may have been a blessing in disguise, as far as the master quality goes, but they nevertheless announced and advertised something and apparently did not check that it was actually what they received and released.
I buy a cart-full just about every sale, but yeah... always do your research on KL releases. And even if it gets a pass, if I know I love a movie and it has the slimmest chance of coming from a UK label, I'll try to wait for that, because it will almost certainly be handled with more care (for the love of god somebody release Bend of the River in the UK).

Yeah I do research on the quality, but not packaging- and in cases where it's cheap and there doesn't seem to be much online (i.e. Nothing Sacred which looks like garbage) I'll just take the risk, which is fine with me. I'm with you on holding out normally, though lately I've been less inclined to do so depending on the film and price.

I get the impression that the KLInsider is more proud of the quantity of releases over the quality, which he often points out when someone brings up Criterion to him
