Re: Twilight Time
Any opinions here on Edge of Eternity, Captain Harlock, and Emperor in August? I’m curious about those.

Re: Twilight Time
I haven't imported a TT disc since Inserts, which is never going to get a Region B release. This is too much to resist though, and it doesn't seem likely to be a priority for Indicator. The Technicolor 'Scope will look lovely from the new 4k.

And we all have Scorsese to thank for getting TCM to make the new 4K-- hopefully he'll say a few words for the Blu-ray and entice more curious buyers in the process

I'm a fan of Schrader and I've not heard about this one very often. Is it any good? I can't imagine this is particularly wholesome (Not that Schrader is anyway.)

Re: Twilight Time
I think it's great, probably Schrader's last on that level. It is similar in a lot of ways to Taxi Driver and Mishima in terms of a suicidal drive towards a type of perfection connected to the character's complications with sex. It's a lot bubblier in its darkness than them though with a lot of effective humour.Big Ben wrote:I'm a fan of Schrader and I've not heard about this one very often. Is it any good? Re: Twilight Time
That Auto Focus cover is so bad yet not in a Twilight Time way that I figured it had to be based on original art, and it is. So, like, they only use original poster art when it is fucking horrible?

If they ditched the blue chick it’d be ten times better right there.

Re: Twilight Time
I’ll write more about it when it’s released theatrically in June, but I think First Reformed is a step above Auto Focus and is Schrader’s best since Affliction, which I still think is his masterpiece.knives wrote:I think it's great, probably Schrader's last on that level. Re: Twilight Time
Thanks for the feedback guys I think I'll pick this one up.
Re: Twilight Time
For Blue Denim it seems like a missed opportunity for Twilight to piggy-back on Criterion's re-release of Midnight Cowboyand include a piece on James Leo Herlihy. It would be interesting if Criterion managed to slip that into their release but so far doesn't look like anything specific addressing him listed.

Dragonwyck looks slathered in DNR. French edition with the old maser seems to look way better.

Looks to me like the gamma or black levels are set wrong.Drucker wrote:Dragonwyck looks slathered in DNR. French edition with the old maser seems to look way better.

Re: Twilight Time
Seven-Ups as well.
Seems to come from a newer restoration with, surprise, more questionable color timing.

The TT looks completely awful, holy cow. Why do they keep going for these dark transfers?

yes.domino harvey wrote:The TT looks completely awful, holy cow. Why do they keep going for these dark transfers?
I waited for this 4K restoration but doesn't look good at all.
The blacks are milky due to questionable gamma/contrast, the colors are weird and I also prefer the grain in the Signal one. It fits the gritty tone of the film.
I don't know if that DNR-like look is due to the 4K scan, but it doesn't seem so to me.
As for the aspect ratio, I don't know which is correct of the two.
Perhaps the TT one.

Re: Twilight Time
It's not only this, but the black levels seem elevated and the colors are, unfortunately like for other Fox 4K restorations, dubiously leaning towards blues.domino harvey wrote:The TT looks completely awful, holy cow. Why do they keep going for these dark transfers?
It seems also that FOX has slightly DNRed it. All things together, it's way worse than it should have been.
Oh well.
